  1. Should social media posts be rated - like movies - so that all posts are flagged based on appropriateness?
Could this be seen as censorship? Should the content a user views be regulated at all?
    If so, in what ways?

    1. I do not think that social media posts should be rated because some people might get offended by what they are being rated as, which might cause friction between people

    3. I think that depends on who is rating the posts. If it is rated by the person uploading the image or video then I think this system would be pointless and ineffective, as the person uploading the content could easily rate everything 'G' so that all of their friends/followers could see it. Also, this may cause people to lie about their age in order to see content that they should not be. If it was rated by the app owners, then the problem still stands, and it would be interesting to see the system that the producers would have to rate the content, as it would take up a great amount of time and employees to man the computers and watch every video and see every picture to be able to rate it, and it would cost the companies money because they would have to hire extra employees to rate all the pictures. On the whole, I think that it would be unsuccessful if social media companies were to attempt to rate every photo/video.

  2. I think that it is unnecessary because it may be an invasion of privacy although there could be a program that detects swear words of inappropriate content.

    1. I don't think this is an invasion of privacy, because if a user is not old/mature enogh to view content they should not be able to view it.

    2. Also, if you were going to criticize this for anything, it would be freedom of choice rather than a breech of privacy - a breech of privacy is generally where your personal information is at risk, whereas freedom of choice is where your choice has been taken away, so that they can no longer choose what they can and can't see.

  3. I also think that social media post should not be rated because that is breaching personal privacy.

  4. That could be a possibility but like josh, I don't think it's needed. I think it would be a case of censorship, but regulating content slightly is a good idea. There could be a system that replaces or gets rid of any inappropriate comments and/or graphic.

  5. I think that certain social media posts should be rated because this may
reduce the amount of people looking at inappropriate material.

  6. Most of the people look at movie ratings more as hints, rather than rules (A seven-year-old friend of ours has watched Jaws). This may apply also for post appropriateness ratings.

I think that most social media sites let you flag inappropriate content already, and YouTube will give you a pre-watching warning if it has been flagged as inappropriate. I think this system works well, but trolls may just flag everything they watch, just to annoy people.

    1. You could have a system that double checks if that person has flagged a child friendly video as inappropriate. Also I think that they should enforce the law more about the age ratings. Quote "A seven-year-old friend of ours has watched Jaws"

  7. I don't think there should be a rating for appropriateness because the video or photo should be looked at by the social media sites administrator so trolls cant flag it just to be a general annoyance.

  8. I think that posts shouldn't be rated because if there is a peace of content that is maybe an inside joke or sarcasm some people may think that this is offending them by other people reading this rating and could start to be rude to that person because of a small rating.

  9. This is breaching privacy rights for social media users. On the other hand this could prevent graphic footage being shown. If like what Cade said they had a censor that checks footage regularly, this weight not breach privacy as much as before.

  10. As a user of social media surely they would understand and be prepared for rude or offending posts. With most social media sites you only have easy access and are exposed to such posts if you decide to "Follow" the user or "like" their posts. However an easier option would be when users create their accounts they rate their own accounts so s of social media have a warning before viewing their posts

  11. I agree with Josh, I think that comments should not be rated and that there should just be a special setup that only detects swear words or inapropriate content. Also I think that someone may say something and the comment rated may take it the wrong way and cause a big fuss over nothing. Another point is that people may judge people by what they have been rated and this may cause arguments and popularity problems over one little comment.

  12. The social media posts should be rated because it alerts some readers that thinks some posts are offensive. This shouldn't be called as a censorship because as I said before, it's reminding people that some posts are offensive.

  13. I agree posts should be rated on content and language as well as online sites and comments to ensure that this content can't be seen by younger viewers.

  14. In my opinion, I think sites or Youtube posts should not be ratd as it may cause an unnecessary fuss. Although, like Meesha and Josh pointed out, there should be some sort of detector so that inappropriate content is not showed to younger viewers.

  15. Many social media users report celebrities' personal profiles 'inappropriate' for no apparent reason already. If content were able to be rated, people may purposely flag innocent users posts. They might rate the posts of people they dislike if the option were available also. A majority of graphic Instagram photos are found on hashtag pages. Eliminating certain hashtags ,so that they're are not compatible with the system, could make users less vulnerable to certain content.

  16. I think certain content should be limited to how old you are. I think you should not be able to make any account without a verification code which is purchased from an authorized outlet.

  17. I don't think all posts should be rated because if you're old enough to know it's inappropriate you shouldn't be doing anything with it. If you aren't old enough, then yes, things should be rated as some things are just not okay to introduce youth to.

  19. I disagree on social media posts being rated because some people could get really emotional from others' rates and not many people are mature enough to rate appropriately.

  20. I don't think that posts should be rated, because the viewers of the post might rate inappropriate posts as g rated and vice versa because they think it is funny or because they are not mature enough.

  21. I don't think Social Media posts should be rated by appropriateness because older people may find posts appropriate that are inappropriate towards youmger people.

  22. I also do not think that it is necessarily an invasion of privacy like others have commented because when a user posts something on social media its posted for everyone to see.

    1. True, Mania it is not an invasion on privacy to someone if they are not old/mature enough to view the content.

  23. I also do not think it is necessary to rate posts on social media sites as it may cause some conflict between other users of the Internet because people may not be mature enough to appropriately rate content causing hassle and confusion between younger viewers/users and their caregivers, but I do however think that the administrators should think about what they are posting, who may view it and what effects on others as well as themselves later in life, maybe having a "private post" button on sites will help to keep younger veiwers/users from being exposed to explicit content, also maybe having a warning to the administrator before posting the content maybe helpful

  24. I do not think it is necessary to censor or rate posts on social media, if someone doesn't want to be involved in something, they can just not waste their time thinking about or taking part in it.
